چکیده

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors are currently being investigated in a wide range in fields including physical, chemical and bio-sensing. The basic principle in a SAW sensor is the detection of changes in the propagation characteristics of the surface acoustic waves which are caused by perturbations on the active surface of the device. The most common situation is measuring the change in propagation velocity of the surface wave as a change in resonant frequency. This chapter is a review of layered SAW devices for sensing applications. A conventional SAW device consists of a piezoelectric substrate with the inter-digital transducer (IDT) patterned on the surface. The layered devices are fabricated by depositing a thin film onto the conventional SAW substrate. Almost any SAW chemical sensor will employ a sensitive layer which interacts with the analyte. However, in this chapter we are concerned with devices where an intermediate layer has been added between the substrate and sensitive layer for its acoustic, dielectric or protective properties. Layered SAW sensors offer a number of advantages over conventional SAW devices without layers:

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) for Chemical Sensing Applications of Recognition Layers †

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators represent some of the most prominent acoustic devices for chemical sensing applications. As their frequency ranges from several hundred MHz to GHz, therefore they can record remarkably diminutive frequency shifts resulting from exceptionally small mass loadings. Their miniaturized design, high thermal stability and possibility of wireless integration make ...

Investigation into Mass Loading Sensitivity of Sezawa Wave Mode-Based Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors

In this work mass loading sensitivity of a Sezawa wave mode based surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is investigated through finite element method (FEM) simulation and the prospects of these devices to function as highly sensitive SAW sensors is reported. A ZnO/Si layered SAW resonator is considered for the simulation study. Initially the occurrence of Sezawa wave mode and displacement amplitud...

A Layered SAW Device Based on ZnO/LiTaO3 for Liquid Media Sensing Applications

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensors comprising a zinc oxide guiding layer deposited on a 36°-YX lithium tantalate substrate were developed. They were found to have greater mass sensitivity than other LiTaO3 based SAW sensors, such as the SiO2/LiTaO3 configuration. In this paper, the fabrication of the ZnO/LiTaO3 sensor is described and micro-characterisation of the deposited films is presented....

Optimization of Surface Acoustic Wave-Based Rate Sensors

The optimization of an surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based rate sensor incorporating metallic dot arrays was performed by using the approach of partial-wave analysis in layered media. The optimal sensor chip designs, including the material choice of piezoelectric crystals and metallic dots, dot thickness, and sensor operation frequency were determined theoretically. The theoretical predictions we...

Sensors - Acoustic Wave Technology Sensors

Acoustic wave devices have been in commercial use for more than 60 years. The telecommunications industry is the largest consumer, accounting for ~3 bil lion acoustic wave filters annually, primarily in mobile cell phones and base stations. These are typically surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, and act as bandpass filters in both the radio frequency and intermediate frequency sections of the ...
